The Importance of Buying… Genuine Car and Bike Parts

More fake car parts are sold in Europe than you think.

According to – the UK government’s official website – counterfeit ‘parts and accessories are seized on a regular basis’ in the UK, while about €2 billion is spent in the  fake goods market on tyres and batteries alone annually in Europe.

To help combat this, in July 2018 the British government launched a ‘Think before you buy’ customer awareness scheme. The studies behind the scheme revealed the sheer scale of counterfeiting in the motor parts industry, while the initiative aims to inform vehicle owners about the dangers of purchasing – intentionally or otherwise – counterfeit car and bike parts.

Sometimes it is difficult to know if parts are real or fake

As well as the inevitable economic consequences for genuine manufacturers, the practice of buying fake parts (which can sometimes be hard to differentiate from legitimate products) increases the risk of accidents on the road, especially when the counterfeit items being installed are safety features such as brakes.

In 2016, a man was arrested and sentenced to a five-month prison sentence for selling fake airbags, advertised as genuine Honda products, on eBay. Honda reported and tested the airbags, finding they would not have activated properly in a crash.

Too Good to be True?

It’s easy to see why people are drawn to counterfeit products – the bags were reportedly on sale for £170, cheaper than a genuine airbag. But sometimes it is difficult to know which parts are real, and which could risk your life.  By shopping from less-than-reputable sites, you are potentially exposing yourself to products which could fail faster than parts which have been vigorously tested. It is often impossible to know if cheaper alternatives readily available online have so much as undergone minimum-requirement safety tests.

Don’t put your mechanic at risk

But it’s not just customers who suffer. If consumers of fake car parts request a garage to fit a faulty part, the liability falls on the garage if anything goes wrong.
